Darren was born in Burnaby, British Columbia, on April 1, 1972. He was drafted by Detroit in the 1992 NHL Entry Draft and was Detroit's 2nd choice, 46th overall in the second round. Last season Darren had points in 23 games. He was plus or even in 52 of 63 games. He played his 100th career game on October 8, 1995 at Edmonton. Darren made his NHL debut on October 5, 1993 at Dallas. He spent two seasons at Belleville in the Ontario Hockey League and led the league in goals in 1991-92, while notching 127 points in 65 games.
